Gurmat Sangeet Study Guide

One of the most important areas of focus for the Gurmat Sangeet Project is the setting up of local chapters for the study of Gurmat Sangeet. The requirements for setting up a local chapter are extremely simple, all that is required is one adult volunteer who is willing to invest the time in learning the five shabads that make up the Basic Syllabus, and a few students of any age who are interested in studying Gurmat Sangeet !

The Basic Syllabus Consists of the following Shabads :

  • Har Har Simro Sant Gopala (Yaman Kalyan)
  • Charan Kamal Prabh Ke Nit Dhyavoh (Bilaval)
  • Mohe Na Bisaro Main Jan Tera (Bhoopali)
  • Re Man Aiso Kar Sanyasa (Bhinn Shadja)
  • Jagat Jot Japai Nis Basur (Ahir Bhairav)

A simple tutorial that explains the system of notation used in the above shabads as well as basic musical concepts is available in the paper :  Gurmat Sangeet Appreciation. The paper also presents a map of the harmonium or keyboard, making it fairly easy for the beginning student to identify and play musical notes.

Once the Sevadar who is going to teach is ready he or she will need to Contact Us in order to be certified and the study of Gurmat Sangeet can begin in the local chapter.

When a chapter has mastered the Basic Syllabus, it can them move on to the Intermediate Syllabus which consists of the following shabads

  • Dinan Ki Pratpal Kare (Yaman Kalyan)
  • He Gobind He Gopal He Dyal Lal (Miyan Ki Malhar )
  • Kal Taran Guru Nanak Aya (Bahar)
  • Bisar Gayi Sabh Taat Parayi (Asavari)
  • Preey Ki Preet Pyari (Kedara)

It is highly recommended that the chapter go through certification for the Intermediate Syllabus, before proceeding to the Advanced Syllabus which consists of the following shabads :

  • Har Bin Kyon Rahiye Dukh Byape (Brindabani Sarang)
  • Sawan Saras Mana Ghan Barse Rut Aaye (Miyan Ki Malhar)
  • Har Ki Gat Nahi Kou Jaane (Bihagda)
  • Mai Main Man Ko Maan Na Tyagyo (Malkauns)
  • Jai Jai Jag Karan Srist Ubaran Mam Pratparan Jai Tegang (Bhairavi)
